  • Overview

    The Optometrist will provide comprehensive vision and ocular health care for UHC patients. They will examine UHC patients’ eyes to diagnose ocular disorders and diseases. As part of the comprehensive eye exam for glasses the optometrist will check patient acuities, refractive error, binocular vision, peripheral vision and ocular health. Contact lens exams will include a topographical study, corneal health study and contact lens fitting. An ocular health assessment will include proper testing as is required based on diagnosis. For example, glaucoma patients need full visual field perimetry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, tonometry and optic nerve interpretation. The optometrist is responsible for interpreting results for the different types of exams and providing patient plans. They administer drugs to patients to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems and prescribe drugs to treat some eye diseases.  As part of the optometrist job duties they will diagnose conditions caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, referring patients to other health care practitioners as needed.  This position is an exempt position and reports to the Optometry Director.


    Works closely with the Optometry Director and other members of the Health Center management team to:

    • Examine the vision and ocular pathways of patients of all ages for vision errors/disorders, ocular disease, ocular trauma/infection and systemic ocular complications
    • Monitor ocular health for systemic conditions (e.g. diabetes);
    • Communicates with patients to get detailed case histories;
    • Use of ophthalmic equipment for diagnostic testing and subjective and objective interpretation;
    • Performing refractions for eyeglass, contact lens or specialty lens prescriptions
    • Responsible for managing fitting, ordering and dispensing of eyeglass prescriptions
    • Manage and maintain inventory of the optical
    • Provide advice, reassurance and patient care on vision-related matters;
    • Make proper and prompt referrals as needed and provide adequate documentation as needed
    • Direct staff, including dispensing opticians and clerical staff;
    • Administering, organizing and planning the development of the practice/optical.



    • Completion of a 4-year program at an accredited optometry school.



    • Possess a valid CPR Certificate


    • Possess a valid CA License



    • Minimum 0-1 years of experience with preferred optical experience and ocular disease management experienceSKILLS
    • Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish)

    • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and push up to 50 pounds (on wheels).
    • Must be able to hear staff on the phone and those who are served in-person, and speak clearly in order to communicate information to patients and staff.
    • Must be able to read memos, computer screens, personnel forms and clinical and administrative documents.
    • Must have high manual dexterity.
    • Must be able to reach above the shoulder level to work, must be able to bend, squat and sit, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel, twist/turn
